Chauvin Prison Mugshot released as he starts 22 1/2 year sentence for George Floyd Murder
The first prison mugshots have been released of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was sentenced for the murder of George Floyd and settling in to a 22 ½ year prison sentence.
Chauvin, 45, is being held at Oak Park Heights Correctional Facility, located about 30 miles from the scene where he kneeled on Floyd's neck for roughly nine minutes on May 25 2020.
Chauvin’s mask obscured face showed little emotion when he was sentenced on June 25, but he did briefly say he wants to give his "condolences to the Floyd family."
His prison sentence fell short of the 30 years requested by the state, but was more than that recommended under state guidelines of 12 ½ years.
He could get parole after serving two-thirds of his sentence with good behaviour, which means he would be released after about 15 years.
The prison mugshot was originally reported by TMZ.
Chauvin is still facing federal civil rights charges in Floyd's death and further charges related to an incident in 2017 in which he allegedly choked and hit a teenager.
Mr Floyd's death ignited a racial backlask in the United States and resulted in protests worldwide.
