John Boyega signs with Netflix to develop African films
John Boyega signs a deal with Netflix to develop African films.
According to Variety, the Star Wars actor will be focusing on African content and his UpperRoom Productions have made a deal to produce non-English films that will be based on West and East Africa.
Currently, three features are included in this new project, two from Nigeria and one from Egypt.
The company stated that the indie production house founded by Boyega "will develop film projects based on stories, cast, characters, crew, literary properties, mythology, screenplays and/or other elements in or around African countries."
The British-Nigerian actor has continued to be an advocate for the Black community. Recently Boyega joined protesters in London's Hyde Park, to show his support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
Boyega hit headlines as he delivered a powerful speech on the importance of Black lives, which could have risked his whole career.
"Black lives have always mattered. We have always been important. We have always meant something," he said.
The actor stressed how "painful" it is to face racial discrimination and explaining that the protests "are a physical representation of" support for George Floyd, Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin, Stephen Lawrence and Mark Duggan -- all victims of police brutality.
