Large areas of London to be made car-free as lockdown eased
Cars and vans are to be closed from large areas of London, for people to walk and cycle safely as lockdown is eased, announced Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
Main streets between London Bridge and Shoreditch, Euston and Waterloo, and Old Street and Holborn, will be limited to buses, pedestrians and cyclists.
It is encouraged for people to walk and cycling to work, as social distancing is harder to maintain on crowded transport and a surge in car use would cause gridlock and a rise in air pollution.
Sadiq Khan said Covid-19 has caused, "the biggest challenge to London’s public transport network in Transport for London’s history.
"It will take a monumental effort from all Londoners to maintain safe social distancing on public transport as lockdown restrictions are gradually eased."
He added, "We can’t see journeys formerly taken on public transport replaced with car usage because our roads would immediately become unusably blocked and toxic air pollution would soar.”
