Ty Chijioke has died aged 47

The Nigerian British rapper, Ty Chijioke has died after contracting Coronavirus. The musician had been in hospital for testing positive for Covid-19 and then was placed in an induced coma to help battle the virus.

Ty's condition seemed to have improved, as he was awake in mid April as mentioned by the GoFundMe site. But unfortunately, page organiser Diane Laidlaw announced his death yesterday.

She wrote: "The family would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has reached out and expressed their concern since he was admitted in hospital but right now they would value having their privacy, so they can mourn privately. They just need time to process."

Originally named Ben Chijioke, Ty released his debut album Awkward in 2001. He was also nominated alongside Amy Winehouse and the Streets for the prestigious Mercury Prize in 2004.

Many UK celebrities have expressed their condolences for the loss of Ty Chijioke, including Grime rapper Ghetts. On Instagram he said, "RIP TY. This one deep I had a lot of respect for ty one of the first from the older generation to embrace me and show me love fly high ty".
